Capstone Reflection
For my project, I was able to create a lesson
plan based off of bullying to present to kids across Connecticut. The first activity
that I would have the students do is an icebreaker called the M&M questionnaire
this consisted of getting bag of M&Ms to pass around along with different
color with rules like blue meaning to share something you like to do for fun
(ect.). The second activity I would have the students do is listen the story of
Jared Benjamin High, a young man who committed suicide as a result of bullying
as well as the story of Cheyenne an SMSA student who was harassed for a
previous relationship. After completing these activities we would move on to the
third activity where I would divide the students into teams and give them a set of index cards to
come up with as many different ways a person can be bullied. Our next activity
would consist of how we as people can prevent ourselves from being bystander
and become allies. For my last and final activity I would present the PSA's on
bullying and cyber bully to the students, the videos would be reciting some
statistics on bullying. While the videos playing a petition to stand against
bullying would be handed out to the students, this would allow each student to
have a choice to change the world.
Some results from my project that I've come across is that a lot of people have felt changed and moved by the things that I've shown them. I've had several students come up to me and tell me how this has changed their perspective and that if they ever do see something wrong happening to another student they promised to try to intervene and stop the situation from escalating. I think it's really important that kids now see what bullying can really do to a person and the fact that one little word can impact a person going through something worse than you could ever imagine.
A specific experience for me would be when a girl came up to me talking about how a friend of hers had committed suicide under the bleachers in her towns high school that was really eye-opening to me because personally I have never met someone who went through the same pain I faced when losing my God-brother. She talked about how she wishes she had done more to help him and cried in my arms. I explained to her that the best way we can keep them alive as survivors of our lost ones is tell their story to make sure that doesn't happen to anyone else.
Areas of my project that were particularly challenging was one getting into the schools that I needed to so that I was able to spread my message as well as people following through. I had incidents where I needed to rely on people to get certain things done and when the time came to get these task finished people back out when I needed them the most. Another challenge I faced was having enough time to edit the film that I was able to record. This has been one of my first times taking long hours of film and editing them into short videos.
My project impacted me in ways that I can't even describe, I was able to learn so much from the project; the way it touched me, the way it touch other people, the stories that people told me and the stories that I researched about are things that I will never forget. This project will definitely impact me and my future allowing me to become more cautious in the way I treat people and in the way I act upon thing when I see something wrong happening.
